A normal grayscale image has steps of 1 / 255 of peak white. By means
of a trick, it is possible to have steps of one in 1785.

A simple DOS tool to do this is available here:

this software looks interesting, except for the part where it's 2010 and
not 1988 so the distribution as a DOS program seems a bit dated.

The choice of tools is not a fashion statement.

It works.

It is easy to use.

More would be less. An "all singing-and dancing", "whistles and
bells", Windows package would be over-kill.
