Greetings, all.

I have started a new blog chronicling my project to produce a complete
digital archive of the Socialist Standard, the official journal of the
Socialist Party of Great Britain which has been published without
interruption since 1904. The blog will deal with the technical and
practical challenges of digitizing a sizeable newspaper corpus. You may
want to read if you are interested in things such as batch image and PDF
manipulation, OCR, indexing, document archiving, digital publishing, and
how to do most or all of the preceding with Free Software.

So, without further ado, I present the Socialist Standard Digitization
Blog: http://ssdigit.nothingisreal.com/

Regards,
Tristan

Very interesting, thanks.

At the same time, it would be more likely to attract attention if it was
on worldsocialism.org rather than on a private blogging system.

Well, possibly, though worldsocialism.org hosts political rather than
technical content. (I'm sure it will host the actual archive, once it is
finished.) I'm really not sure where would be best to tell technical
people about the blog; there don't seem to be any active newsgroups
dedicated to document archiving. Possibly there are some web forums where
people discuss this sort of thing, though I'm not aware of any.

(Incidentally, you probably don't know me, but I know of you and can't
remember whence. I've had your site bookmarked for years, and follow the
RSS feed of your blog.)

Regards,
Tristan

Ah. Yes, understood.

Most of the people doing this seem to be in the Digital Humanities
field, so you'd find them in places like the TEI-L and HUMANIST mailing
lists. Web forums are a rather impermanent medium for this kind of thing.

That's very kind of you...and I haven't updated it for nearly a year --
my excuse is that I'm in the final stages of my PhD and am running out
of time (so what am I doing posting on c.t.p, I ask myself :-)
